On his latest effort, James McMurtry spares no emotion in expressing his bitter sociopolitical protest on tracks such as “We Can’t Make It Here” and “Six-Year Drought,” but still finds room for an homage to early rock and roll with “The Old Part of Town.” The most impressive track is the wistful duet with fellow Texan, Joe Ely, on “Old Slew Foot.”
