The stately score
for Roman Polanski’s cinematic interpretation of the Dickens’ classic
is intriguing in that it sounds very traditional, rather than many movie scores’
feeble attempts to modernize traditional sounding music. The only shortcoming
is that Portman’s music is often too beautiful for the film’s dark
themes. Characters such as the despicable Fagin should probably require more
strident undertones.
