Low Millions: I'm Your Son
By Peter Vouras
Ex-Girlfriends (CD Manhattan)

I imagine it must be difficult to be the child of someone famous and even more difficult to try and achieve success in the same field. Some have been very successful (Rufus Wainwright) and others not as successful (Sean Lennon).

Thankfully, Adam Cohen, the son of legendary singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen and brainchild of the band Low Millions, falls in the former category. Obviously blessed with great songwriting genes, Cohen the younger takes us on a delightful journey on his debut album, Ex-Girlfriends.

A self-deprecating sort, Cohen, 30, seems to really be happy about the early response to his album. “After all, you don’t do this to be admired like some local cheese in some Alpine valley,” says Cohen. “I was on the treadmill this morning shadow boxing thinking, ‘God, I have been at this for so long that if I haven’t gotten a lot better then it is just plain embarrassing.’”

Low Millions is essentially Cohen, who maintains an open door policy with his musicians. “It’s basically whoever can make it. I am so lucky to be in the mix of musicians of great caliber. These guys are tremendous players.” The album lists Michael Chaves, who has worked with John Mayer, on guitar, Jorgen Carlsson on bass, and Eric Eldenius on drums although the touring band could be totally different at any time.

The songs on Ex-Girlfriends are just about that. “Eleanor,” the first single is the most radio friendly with a great hook-laden chorus. “Julia” is a soothing syncopated ballad and “Hey Jane” is the quintessential pop song that will have you humming the melody all day long.

When asked if his current girlfriend was worried she might end up on his next album, Cohen playfully comments, “I think she’s worried that she won’t be.”

As for the most sensual song on the album, “Nikki,” Cohen recalls in fondness, “ Nikki . . . man, you say Nikki, and every muscle in me stands at attention.”

Enough said. Adam Cohen and Low Millions are on their way. “Sometimes I view this [music business] as narcissism on a stick and if that’s the way it is then I want to be good at narcissism on a stick.”
